  • Sports Shorts 7-4-18
    County offers adult softball leagues If you are interested in joining an adult softball team, or adding a team to the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation men’s  or co-ed softball leagues, the program is now open. Individuals can sign up online at www.mylancastersc.org/parks, or drop by the main office at the Springdale Recreation Center, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. The fee is $40 per person.
  • Foursome’s 54 nets golf tourney win
    The winning foursome shot a sizzling 18 under to take the win in the annual Indian Land Rotary Club golf tournament at Carolina Lakes Golf Club on May 10. The winning team, with a 54, included Brian Cogan, Bryce Miller, Matt Powlowski and Mark Robinson. Miller highlighted the winning team’s effort with a hole-in-one on number 12. The field featured 16 foursomes, for a total of 64 players. The runner-up team, with a 17-under 55, included Adam Cooper, Damien Bourgeious, Dominic Picirillo and Adam Polsock.

    Greenway offers outdoors programs Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will host the following outdoors programs: • Intro to Kayaking – 6:30 p.m. June 28 and July 9 at the Rush Pavilion, 2573 Lake Haigler Drive. This class will cover appropriate gear for kayaking and how to fit it, how to choose a safe kayaking location based on your ability and how to safely and effectively get into and out of your boat. On the water, it will cover basic paddling techniques.

    Greenway offers outdoors programs Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will host the following outdoors programs: • Couch to 5K – 8:30 p.m. June 9-Aug. 11 at the Rush Pavilion, 2573 Lake Haigler Drive. The 10-week program is for those who are just starting out running or are looking to get back into it after some time off.
  • Sawyer wins Bristol half-marathon
    Indian Land runner Hannah Kate Sawyer, 16, won the Bristol Half & Half in Bristol, Va., on April 21. She ran the half-marathon (13.1 miles) in 1:42:45. She competed in the 19-and-under category. The Bristol Half & Half runs through the twin cities of Bristol, Va., and Bristol, Tenn., starting at Virginia High School and ending at Tennessee High School. The half marathon benefited the American Cancer Society.

    Family Fishing Clinic June 16 in Sun City A free Family Fishing Clinic is 1-4 p.m. June 16 at Grandparents’ Park at the intersection of Del Webb Boulevard and Kingfisher Drive in Sun City Carolina Lakes. Instructors are SCCL Sport Fishing Club volunteers, trained by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. The clinic will introduce the basics of fishing.     County pools offer swim lessons • The Gregory Family YMCA, 512 Hubbard Drive, Lancaster, will hold four summer sessions for youth swim lessons. Session one is June 4-14, session two is June 18-28, session three is July 9-19 and session four is July 23-Aug. 2.Classes are Monday-Thursday. Class hours are 10-10:30 a.m., 10:30-11 a.m., 5:30-6 p.m., 6-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-7 p.m. Cost is $45 for members and $60 for non-members.   • Lancaster public pool opens May 26
    The Lancaster County Parks and Recreation’s Wylie Street Swimming Pool, 106 S. Wylie St., Lancaster, opens May 26 for the 2018 season. Pool hours are 3-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m. Saturday, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The swimming fees are a single-day fee of $3 per person (all ages), single-month pass $20 per person (all ages), single-season pass $50 per person (all ages), family month pass $50 (no more than a family of five) and a family season pass $100 (no more than a family of five).     ILHS youth baseball camp June 25-29 The annual Indian Land High School Warriors youth baseball camp is 9 a.m.- noon June 25-29 at the ILHS baseball field, 8063 River Road, Indian Land. The camp is open to ages 6-12. The fee is $60. For details, call coach Joey Robinson at (803) 547-7571.
  • Felder has new hoops home in New Mexico
    Rakym Felder, the former Indian Land High School star basketball player who played one season at South Carolina, has a new school. Felder, a 5-10 guard, has signed with New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, N.M. Gamecocks’ men’s basketball coach Frank Martin released Felder, twice suspended at USC, on April 23.
