  • Sports Shorts 11-9-11
    ILMS fall sports awards Thursday Indian Land Middle School will hold its fall sports banquet and awards night Thursday, Nov. 10, in the school cafeteria. The meal (which requires prepaid tickets) begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome at the presentation.
  • Bluefins place 5th in all-star meet
    The BridgeMill Bluefins wrapped up their season with a fifth-place finish in the All-Star Meet at Mecklenburg Aquatics Center Uptown. Springfield came in first, followed by Blakeney second, Providence Downs South third, Charlotte Christian, BridgeMill, Lake Park, Crismark and Fairmeadows in Division 6 of the 69-team Greater Charlotte Swim League. BridgeMill’s all-star winners were: • Emma Jette, who won the girls 15-18 50m freestyle and 100m medley • Gunnar Redd, who won the boys 9-10 25m backstroke
  • BridgeMill swimmers tie one, lose two
    The BridgeMill Bluefins tied with Lake Park, 399-399, in a home meet June 27. “Our swimmers did an awesome job tonight,” BridgeMill head coach Marley Cole said. “Lake Park even had 10 more swimmers than we did.” In its June 23 meet against Blakeney, the BridgeMill team lost, 461-310. The team traveled to Providence Downs South on Thursday, June 30, where it lost, 488-308. (See next week’s paper for winners.)
  • Bluefins splash to another victory
    The BridgeMill Bluefins posted their second win of the season June 20, beating  Fair-meadows, 413-304. “Even though Fairmeadows had a great boys team, our girls team fought really hard and made up the extra points that we needed,” BridgeMill head coach Marley Cole said. The team traveled to Blakeney on Thursday, June 23, and hosted Lake Park on Monday, June 27. Results from those meets were not available at press time.
  • Bocce tourney raises $3,000
    Michael J. Nellenbach Sun City Carolina Lakes Bocce Ball Club Excitement reigned May 13-15 as the 2011 Sun City Lancaster Children’s Home Bocce Ball Club Tournament took over the Sun City bocce ball courts.
  • Pickleball teams win at state
    By Frank Kinder/Special to Carolina Gateway The Sun City Carolina Lakes pickleball team brought home 28 medals, including 10 golds, from the first official pickleball events at the S.C. Senior Sports Classic, held May 21 on the campus of Francis Marion University in Florence.
  • BridgeMill Bluefins swim to first win
    The BridgeMill Bluefins posted their first win this season, beating the Crismark Comets, 408-374, on Thursday, June 16.  The Bluefins got off to a slow start, losing to the Springfield Greenwave, 391-229, in the opener June 9. Bluefins coach Marley Cole said despite the loss, the three-year-old team showed great improvements from its mock meet the week before. “All of the swimmers tried their best, showed great sportsmanship and had a great time,” Cole said.
  • LCPRC salutes Little League baseball champs
    This year, the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Commission Little League baseball program, sanctioned through Little League, crowned three regular-season champions. Coach Pitch (ages 7-8) All Hours Plumbing from the Indian Land area took the Coach Pitch regular season title. The league, for 7-8-year-olds, had eight teams throughout the county. Two all-star teams will represent the league in the North District Three tournament at Runde Field in Tega Cay.

  • IL boy helps win silver at national hockey game
    Local area youths recently clinched a silver medal at the 2011 USA National Hockey Championship this month in San Jose, Calif. Spencer Krul of Indian Land and Clay Ellerbrock of Tega Cay traveled to San Jose to participate in the USA National Hockey Championship tournament April 2-3 as members of the Charlotte Metro Hockey Associations Charlotte Junior Checkers team. This Junior Checkers team is the first team from the Charlotte area to ever advance to the USA National Hockey Championship.
