  • Sports Shorts 8-1-18
    County offers fall youth sports The Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Commission offers five fall sports: • Football, ages 7-12, $75 fee  • Cheerleading, ages 7-12, $30 fee • Soccer, ages 5-15, $65 fee • Youth volleyball, girls ages 7-12, $50 fee • Introduction to soccer, age 4 only, $50 fee – This introduces the basic techniques of soccer. Each child will receive a T-shirt and soccer ball. Age cut-off date is Sept. 1, 2018.
  • Angels slide to 3rd in state softball tourney
    BLUFFTON – Gene Knight, head coach of the Lancaster Dixie Softball 10U All-Stars (Angels) is still smiling after his team finished third in the state tournament. Aynor won, followed by Sumter, Lancaster and Byrnes. “Disappointed? Nah, not one bit,” Knight said. “This is a very special group of girls. When we go back next year, I feel good about our chances. And I believe we will be going back.”
  • Sports Shorts 7-25-18
    ASC Greenway offers Moonlight Kayaking Anne Springs Close Greenway will host Moonlight Kayaking at 8:15 p.m. July 27 at the Rush Pavilion, 2573 Lake Haigler Drive, Fort Mill. Cost is $15 for a single kayak and $20 for a tandem kayak. Make required reservations at www.ascgreenway.org. Nonmembers also pay a greenway entry fee of $5.
  • Lancaster Angels win district crown
    JEFFERSON – The Lancaster Dixie Softball Angels (10U) All-Stars fought their way out the losers’ bracket in late June to win the district title and advance in state play. Lancaster beat Blythewood twice on the last day of the district tournament to advance. The Angels topped Blythe-wood 7-1 in a winner-take-all finale after winning the seesaw first game by a 6-4 margin. “It was pretty close,” said Lancaster all-stars coach Gene Knight, of the two-run win. “Thankfully, we were able to stay on top.”

    ASC Greenway offers outdoor programs Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will host the following outdoors programs: • Get to Know the Greenway guided tour – 9 a.m. July 18 at the Dairy Barn Entrance, 250 Dairy Barn Lane, Fort Mill. The van tour lasts about an hour. No hiking required. The event is free, but registration is necessary due to limited space.

    County offers adult softball leagues If you are interested in joining an adult softball team, or adding a team to the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation men’s  or co-ed softball leagues, the program is now open. Individuals can sign up online at www.mylancastersc.org/parks, or drop by the main office at the Springdale Recreation Center, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. The fee is $40 per person.

  • Foursome’s 54 nets golf tourney win
    The winning foursome shot a sizzling 18 under to take the win in the annual Indian Land Rotary Club golf tournament at Carolina Lakes Golf Club on May 10. The winning team, with a 54, included Brian Cogan, Bryce Miller, Matt Powlowski and Mark Robinson. Miller highlighted the winning team’s effort with a hole-in-one on number 12. The field featured 16 foursomes, for a total of 64 players. The runner-up team, with a 17-under 55, included Adam Cooper, Damien Bourgeious, Dominic Picirillo and Adam Polsock.

    Greenway offers outdoors programs Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will host the following outdoors programs: • Intro to Kayaking – 6:30 p.m. June 28 and July 9 at the Rush Pavilion, 2573 Lake Haigler Drive. This class will cover appropriate gear for kayaking and how to fit it, how to choose a safe kayaking location based on your ability and how to safely and effectively get into and out of your boat. On the water, it will cover basic paddling techniques. 
  • Sports Shorts 6-13-18
    Greenway offers outdoors programs Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will host the following outdoors programs: • Couch to 5K – 8:30 p.m. June 9-Aug. 11 at the Rush Pavilion, 2573 Lake Haigler Drive. The 10-week program is for those who are just starting out running or are looking to get back into it after some time off.
