  • Sports Shorts 3-13-19
    LCPR offers adult softball league Lancaster County Parks and Recreation is looking to start its adult (ages 16 and up) softball league in March. This men’s slow-pitch softball league will play games at Walnut Creek, Buford Recreation Center and Nesbit Park in Waxhaw from March 25 through May. LCPR will provide officials, shirts and all softballs for play. Team fee is $480 per team of up to 12 players. Any additional players will be $40 each. Rosters need to be turned in by March 13.     Universal Martial Arts tourney March 9 Hanshi James White and Universal Karate Studios will host the 45th annual Universal Martial Arts championship March 9 at the Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. The championship, featuring men, women and children from age 3 to adults, offers 250 divisions of competition for beginners to black belt masters in fighting, forms, weapons, self-defense, grappling and breaking. Grappling, an action-packed field, is the newest division for the competition.

    Register now for youth ball sports Registration for Lancaster County Parks and Recreation youth spring sports has opened. • T-ball for boys ages 4-5, as of May 1, 2019, costs $50. This group hits strictly off the tee. • Swing league for boys ages 5-6, as of May 1, 2019, costs $50. This is coach pitch for the first three balls, then two off the tee if the batter fails to hit pitched balls.

    Gregory Family YMCA offers swim lessons The Gregory Family YMCA at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster, 512 Hubbard Drive, Lancaster, will hold swimming lessons Feb. 25-March 27 (Monday/Wednesday) and Feb. 26- March 28 (Tuesday/Thursday). Class times are 6-6:30 p.m. or 6:30-7 p.m. No classes will be held March 11-14. Aquatics Director Anne H. Small and members of her staff will teach the classes. For details, call (803) 313-7102.   • Horn is Dixie Nationals mat champion
    Indian Land youth wrestler Joshua Horn has captured another national title. The 11-year-old went 5-0 in the 12 and under division at the Dixie Nationals American Crown in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 28-29. All five wins were pins, earrning him the Most Valuable Wrestler title in the 95-pound weight class. He was also named an All-American Wrestler for the eighth time.
  • Sports Shorts 2-6-19
    Register now for Palmetto Challenge The Palmetto Challenge inspires teams of two, three or four to hike or bike as many miles as possible between March 11 and April 28 on the state’s trails,   greenways and sidewalks. Palmetto Conservation Foundation invites teams across the state to register through Feb. 25 for the challenge. Teams will submit weekly mileage, which will be visible on the PCF website so teams can keep up with their competitors.

If child will be 7 before Aug. 31, 2019, sign up for the 7/8 Darlings. • Youth baseball for boys ages 7-12, as of May 1, 2019, costs $75.
