  • Indian Land captures KLS titles
    Indian Land High School ran away with the titles in the 13th annual KLS Running for Ryan Lancaster County track meet April 6 at the Lancaster High School track. The Lady Warriors topped the girls field with 116 points on 10 first-place finishes. Buford High School’s girls followed with 52 points, with Andrew Jackson High School at 39.5 points and host Lancaster with 35.5 points.

    LCPRC umpires meeting April 24 Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will hold an officials meeting for Swing League, Girls Sweetees and T-Ball at 5:30 p.m. April 24 in the conference room at the Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. Officials must be at least age 15, must bring their Social Security number and be able to work Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Teams will play in the Lancaster, Buford, Kershaw, Heath Springs and Walnut Creek areas.
  • IL youth wrestlers win state crowns
    Two Indian Land youth wrestlers brought home state championship titles this spring. Joshua Horn topped off an undefeated season in S.C. youth wrestling by winning the 2019 S.C. Youth Wrestling Association state championship for 10-under at 95 pounds. Joshua ended his season with a 47-0 record. Joshua is a fifth-grader at Indian Land Elementary School. He is the son of Ted and Carrie Horn of Indian Land and grandson of Linda Horn.

    Running for Ryan track meet April 6 The 13th annual KLS Running for Ryan track meet is April 6 at the Lancaster High School track. The annual meet, which features all four county track teams for girls and boys competition, is also held to promote a greater awareness of KLS – Klein Levin Syndrome. It is held in memory of Ryan McKinney, a former Lancaster High School track athlete who died in 2006 of cardiac arrhythmia. The three-hour meet begins at 10 a.m., with the opening ceremonies at 11.

    Gregory YMCA offers swim lessons The Gregory Family Center YMCA at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster has set its third session of swimming lessons. Session three is April 1-24 Monday/Wednesday, and April 2-25 Tuesday/Thursday.Class times are 6-6:30 p.m. or 6:30-7 p.m. Classes are taught by Aquatics Director Anne H.     Laps for Lancers fundraiser March 23 The Laps for Lancers fundraiser begins at 8 a.m. March 23 at USC Lancaster, 476 Hubbard Drive, Lancaster. The event will feature a 5 and 10K race, a non-timed 5K walk/run and a 5K stroller division. The entry fee is $30, which includes a pancake and sausage breakfast. To register, visit racingtoes.com. Gregory YMCA offers swim lessons The Gregory Family Center YMCA at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster has set its third session of swimming lessons.

    LCPR offers adult softball league Lancaster County Parks and Recreation is looking to start its adult (ages 16 and up) softball league in March. This men’s slow-pitch softball league will play games at Walnut Creek, Buford Recreation Center and Nesbit Park in Waxhaw from March 25 through May. LCPR will provide officials, shirts and all softballs for play. Team fee is $480 per team of up to 12 players. Any additional players will be $40 each. Rosters need to be turned in by March 13.     Universal Martial Arts tourney March 9 Hanshi James White and Universal Karate Studios will host the 45th annual Universal Martial Arts championship March 9 at the Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. The championship, featuring men, women and children from age 3 to adults, offers 250 divisions of competition for beginners to black belt masters in fighting, forms, weapons, self-defense, grappling and breaking. Grappling, an action-packed field, is the newest division for the competition.

    Register now for youth ball sports Registration for Lancaster County Parks and Recreation youth spring sports has opened. • T-ball for boys ages 4-5, as of May 1, 2019, costs $50. This group hits strictly off the tee. • Swing league for boys ages 5-6, as of May 1, 2019, costs $50. This is coach pitch for the first three balls, then two off the tee if the batter fails to hit pitched balls.

    Gregory Family YMCA offers swim lessons The Gregory Family YMCA at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster, 512 Hubbard Drive, Lancaster, will hold swimming lessons Feb. 25-March 27 (Monday/Wednesday) and Feb. 26- March 28 (Tuesday/Thursday).
