  • Officials considering strict smoking law

    Smoking in Lancaster County may become a lot more restrictive this year.
    County Council is expected to soon consider a proposed ordinance that would ban smoking in all public-access buildings in the county.
    The county’s Heath & Wellness Commission had been discussing the idea for a while. County Administrator Steve Willis said the drafted ordinance is modeled after those adopted in York and Greenville counties.
    The ordinance would prohibit smoking in all enclosed public places, including restaurants, retail stores, motel lobbies, clubs and bars.

    IL fire protection board to meet today
    Due to scheduling conflicts, the May meeting of the Indian Land Fire Protection District Board will be today, May 23, instead of May 16. The board will meet at 7 p.m. at the Indian Land Fire Station, 185 Six Mile Creek Road.
    The agenda includes election of officers, 2012-13 budget revisions, budget schedule for 2013-14 and the volunteer dinner on June 21.

  • Council to take first stab at county budget Monday

    A year after county officials and residents debated the contents of its annual budget, Lancaster County Council will begin the process again Monday, May 21.
    That’s when council will hear first reading of the county budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2013.
    After three meetings of council’s Finance Committee, the draft budget is $1.65 million out of balance because of several cost increases and newly added community needs.

  • County Council sidelines B-3 zoning issue

    The long road toward revising commercial zoning in the Panhandle took another detour Monday, May 14, as Lancaster County Council decided to remove a potential ordinance from its agenda.
    After years of debate and wrangling, as well as several starts and stops, council was scheduled to hear first reading of an ordinance designed to address problems with the B-3 zoning classification in Indian Land.
    However the proposed ordinance was immediately sidelined only minutes into Monday’s meeting, as Councilwoman Charlene McGriff motioned to remove it from the agenda.

    Republican debate/forum Thursday
    The Lancaster County Republican Party will hold a debate/forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Mike Williams Builders, 1351 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.
    County Council Districts 3 and 7 will debate. S.C. House District 44 candidates may also debate, pending the outcome of the Senate judiciary hearing.

    County Council to see B3 zoning revisions
    The proposal by the Ad Hoc B3 Committee for revisions to the uses in the B3 zoning classification will be heard by Lancaster County Council at its regular meeting Monday, May 14, in council chambers on the second floor of the Lancaster County Administration Building, 101 N. Main St., Lancaster. This meeting is open to the public and are invited to attend.

    IL GOP Club to host District 7 debate
    The Indian Land Republican Club will hosting a Lancaster County Council District 7 debate at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Del Webb Library at Indian Land, 7641 Charlotte Highway. This debate will be a crucial step toward determining who the first District 7 council member will be.

  • Finance committee begins county budget talks

    The creation of a new 911 system, rising gas prices and the addition of new emergency personnel are some of the challenges the county’s Finance Committee will tackle when it begins discussing the county budget Monday, April 30.
    Lancaster County Council’s Finance Committee will hold the first of three budget meetings Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the council conference room in the Lancaster County Administration Building. The meeting will be a review of the county’s budget for fiscal year 2012-13.
