  • IL priest publishes book on happiness

    from Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church
    Father Jeffrey F. Kirby of Indian Land recently published a new book, “Kingdom of Happiness – Living the Beatitudes in Everyday Life.”
    Kirby is parish priest of the fastest-growing parish in the Southeast, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, on Waxhaw Highway (S.C. 75).

  • Faith hosts food truck on Friday

    Faith Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a Second Harvest mobile food pantry Friday, July 13.
    It will be in the parking lot of the new Faith Presbyterian Church building at 7520 Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521 and Van Wyck Road), Indian Land.
    Previous mobile pantries were staged at Belair United Methodist Church on Shelley Mullis Road.
    Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the distribution of food should begin at about 9 a.m.
    Food is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, until it is gone.

    St. John’s UMC posts upcoming events
    St. John’s United Methodist Church, 160 Tom Hall St., Fort Mill, will hold the following events:
    • The Wacky Wednesdays summer program for church members in kindergarten through fifth grade are July 11, 25 and Aug. 8.
    • St. John’s Grief Support Group meets at 4:30 p.m. July 18.

  • Church offers Camp Vivace for youth

    Living Saviour Lutheran Church will offer Camp Vivace, its popular music, drama and art camp for youth ages 7-12, from July 16 to 20 at the church, 6817 Carmel Road, Charlotte. The church limits the size of the camp and asks parents to register children by July 6.

  • Salkehatchie a ‘Godsend’

    Indian Land resident Carrie Greer’s front yard was completely overgrown, her roof covered with debris, and her front porch buried in rotting firewood that she no longer needed.
    Greer had back surgery two years ago and is due for a knee replacement soon, so she couldn’t do the work herself. A team of Catawba Salkehatchie campers made quick work of the chores and then moved on to painting and plumbing in her house.

    Funding needed for African mission
    Chaplain Scott Girard and Dr. Jeff Richards, a professor and pastor, are planning a June 29-July 15 teaching mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over 600 pastors in two major cities will attend pastoral training institutes at no charge.
    The duo are seeking sponsors at $30 per pastor, which provides them with one meal per day and a bus ticket. They get their own lodging, usually sleeping on the ground or in a nearby church.

  • Local man to help teach pastors in Africa

    Sun City Carolina Lakes resident Scott Girard has been busy this summer preparing for a two-week mission trip in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with the organization Global Teaching and Preaching.
    Together with the nonprofit’s founder, Dr. Jeff Richards, he will travel to the African nation’s capital, Kinshasa, on June 29 to train 300 local pastors. They will train another 300 at the city of Goma on the other side of the large country the next week.

  • OLOG hosts ‘Cathletics!’ VBS

    Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church held a free Catholic VBS program June 18-22. The theme was “Cathletics! Training to be Champions for Christ.” Two Dominican sisters from Nashville provided instruction for the children during the faith rotation. Scripture lessons were woven into the music, games and crafts rotations.

    St. Johns United Methodist Church, 160 Tom Hall St., Fort Mill, will hold the following events:
    • The Wacky Wednesdays summer program for church members in kindergarten through fifth grade are June 27, July 11, 25 and Aug. 8. On June 27, the group will see the movie “Incredibles 2” at the Manchester Theater in Rock Hill. Cost of movie is $9.70 for those under age 12. Sign up on the blue sheet in the main hallway.
