    St. John’s UMC posts events
    St. John’s United Methodist Church, 160 Tom Hall St., Fort Mill, will hold the following events:
    • During the Vespers service at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12, create a gingerbread house with your family or join others to work on one. The usual Wednesday evening meal will be at 5:45 p.m.
    • The R.E.A.L Kids for Christ (kindergarten-fifth grade) will go caroling 12:15-2:30 p.m. Dec. 16.
    • Angel Tree gifts must be returned by noon Dec. 16, so the youth can deliver them that day.

  • Van Wyck candle-lighting event is Sunday

    The churches of Van Wyck will come together Sunday, Dec. 9, to light hundreds of candles along Old Hickory Road and hear short Christmas messages and music.
    In its 25th year, The Lighting of the Way is an annual multi-faith lighting event organized by the Van Wyck Woman’s Club that ushers in the Advent season, unifying neighbors and friends. It is Van Wyck’s second Christmas as an official town of South Carolina.

    Belair food pantry open
    Belair United Methodist Church, 8095 Shelley Mullis Road, opens its food pantry for Indian Land residents 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 6 (first and third Thursday of each month). Donations of food or cash may be dropped off at the Belair church office 9 a.m.-noon weekdays.

    Faith hosts mobile pantry Nov. 14
    Faith Presbyterian Church, 7520 Charlotte Highway, Indian Land, will sponsor a Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry on Nov. 14.
    The truck will be in the parking lot of the new Faith Presbyterian Church building at the intersection of U.S. 521 and Van Wyck Road.
    Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the distribution of food about 9 a.m.

    Crossroads shows free movie
    Crossroads Lutheran Church, at the corner of Shelley Mullis and Henry Harris roads, Indian Land, will show a free movie, “I Can Only Imagine,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 9. This movie is the true story of how faith at a young age helped Bart Millard, lead singer of the group Mercy Me, overcome obstacles and lead him to unexpected success. Bring your own snacks and beverages.

    El Bethel mortgage-burning ceremony
    El Bethel AME Zion Church, 8631 Henry Harris Road, Indian Land, held a mortgage-burning ceremony at 3 p.m. Oct. 28. Bishop Mildred B. Hines spoke at the event, which drew AME Zion pastors, evangelists and conference and district officers.

  • Girard teaches African pastors

    A volcano, the World Cup and ebola all played a role in Sun City Carolina Lakes resident the Rev. Scott Girard’s mission trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
    Together with Global Teaching and Preaching founder Dr. Jeff Richards, he visited Kinshasa for a week beginning June 29 to train more than 300 local pastors.
    They also trained another 400 at the city of Goma on the other side of the large country the following week.
