VFW Golf Tournament May 8 at Ballantyne
Indian Land VFW Post 12136 will host a Memorial Golf Tournament on May 8 at The Golf Club at Ballantyne Resort, 10000 Ballantyne Commons Parkway, Charlotte. 
Entrance fee of $135 includes cart, range balls, breakfast, lunch, contests and prizes.
The Indian Land VFW Post is made up of veterans in south Charlotte and upper Lancaster County.
Proceeds will help buy land and build or find an existing facility to serve the needs of all area veterans.

IL Rotary Club golf tourney May 9
The 2019 Indian Land Rotary Club Golf Tournament is May 9 at Carolina Lakes Golf Club, 23012 Kingfisher Drive in Sun City Carolina Lakes. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
The first-place team will win $200 and a trophy; second place will win $100; third place wins a $25 gift card and the last place team gets a prize, too. There will be closest-to-the-pin, longest-drive and putting contests, as well as a chance to win a new vehicle.
Mulligans are available and there will be a 50/50 raffle at the event.
Tickets are $440 per team of four golfers or $125 per person. Tickets include lunch, dinner and a free round of golf at Carolina Lakes Golf Club.
Lunch is provided by Jersey Mike’s; dinner provided by 521 BBQ, with a complimentary beer cart during the tournament.
The tournament raises funds for local Rotary projects, including collegiate scholarships for Indian Land High School seniors and dictionaries for all third-graders in Panhandle elementary schools.
The club is also seeking sponsors for the tournament, ranging from $125 tee box signs to the $3,000 titanium level.

Register now for county swim team
Registration for the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation swim team is open through May 10 at the Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster.
The team is open to boys and girls ages 5-18, as of June 1. The registration fee is $80 per child, which includes a swim cap and T-shirt.
New swimmers must attend a skills assessment 3-4 p.m. May 18. They must be able to swim 25 yards (l lap) of freestyle and backstroke (ages 10 under), or 50 yards (two laps) of freestyle and backstroke (ages 11-up) without assistance or stopping. New swimmers must pass this assessment to be on the competitive swim team.
Swimsuit fitting is 3-4 p.m. May 18 at the Wylie Street Pool, 106 S. Wylie St., Lancaster, or online at www.augustaswim. Female suits are $60 each and male suits are $46 each. Team bathing suits are not required. Girls are required to wear a navy one-piece suit and boys a navy jammer spandex suit. Returning swimmers may wear a swimsuit from previous years as long as it is navy.
The Lancaster Swim Team competes in the Metrolina Swim League. Away meets will be in the Rock Hill/Fort Mill area. The 2019 season ends June 29.

Free family fishing clinic May 18
A free family fishing clinic will be held at Grandchildren’s Park in Sun City Carolina Lakes from 1-4 p.m. May 18.
Instructors are resident volunteers who are members of the Sport Fishing Club. Bait, rods and reels, and tackle will be provided. The clinic is designed to introduce the basics of fishing to both young and old. Space is limited.

5K Race for Charity May 18
Lancaster Runs and Lancaster Rotary Club will host a 5K Race for Charity May 18 at Lancaster High School, 617 Normandy Road. The event will begin with a Tot Trot for kids aged 5 and under at 7:45 a.m. and a 5K run and walk at 8 a.m. Sign up is available at https://runsignup.com/Race/SC/Lancaster/RaceforCharity5k. Emerson Ellis Memorial Golf Tournament May 21
The Carolina Traffic and Transportation Club will host the annual Emerson Ellis Memorial Golf Tournament May 21 at Lancaster Golf Course, 1821 Springs Club Road, Lancaster, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and shotgun start at 10:30 a.m.
Registration is $75 per player, which includes golf, cart fees, on-course beverages, cookout and one ticket for the cash drawing. Mulligans are $5 and limited to two per player. Tickets for the meal for non-players are $15.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, as well as close-ups on par three and long-drive holes. The drawing for the cash prize will take place after the tournament and entrants must be present to win.
A hole sponsorship is $100, with beverage cart sponsorship $200.

Gregory Family YMCA offers swim lessons
The University of South Carolina Lancaster’s Gregory Family YMCA has set swim lessons for the summer session.
Lessons, held Monday-Thursday, are at the Gregory Family YMCA at USCL, 512 Hubbard Drive in Lancaster.
The classes are taught by USCL Aquatics Director Anne H. Small and her staff.
Session 1 is June 3-13 and includes Aqua Infant, Wee Toddler, Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4. Session 2 is June 17-27 and includes Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4. Session 3 is July 8-18 and includes Aqua Infant, Wee Toddler, Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4. Session 4 is July 22-Aug 1 and includes Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4.
No classes will be held July 1-5.
Morning classes for Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4 are 10-10:30 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m.
Evening classes for Aqua Infant, Wee Toddler, Aqua Tot and Levels 1-4 are 5:30-6 p.m., 6-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-7 p.m.
