Coastal Carolina University’s equestrian team came in fourth place as a team at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Fence Competition in February.
The team placed sixth overall for the 2018-19 show season.
The team includes one rider from Indian Land – Kirsten Rittereiser, who is majoring in exercise and sport science at the Myrtle Beach school.
The equestrian team is a club sport organization on CCU’s campus. In order to attend intercollegiate equestrian competitions, team members hold multiple fundraisers each semester.
The riders practice at Thurlo Ranch in Conway.
During the 2016-17 show season, the CCU equestrian team competed in the IHSA for the region and took home a Cacchione Cup.
The Cacchione Cup is awarded to open riders with the highest combined points in the entire region, which includes 11 colleges and universities in South Carolina and Georgia.
The IHSA serves more than 400 college and university varsity and club teams across the United States and parts of Canada, with more than 8,900 active riders. It was established in 1967 by Robert E. Cacchione, while a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
