from Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church
Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone has appointed Father Jeffrey F. Kirby as pastor of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Indian Land.
Kirby has served the church as its administrator since August 2016.
As pastor, Kirby steps into the full role as the “proper shepherd” of the parish.
His duties include the preaching of the Word of God; delivering catechetical instruction; fostering charitable works and promoting social justice; encouraging prayer within the home and the parish; evangelizing those without faith; and nourishing the faithful through the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and penance.
A special emphasis is placed on the pastor’s obligation to provide for the Catholic education of his people, particularly children and young adults, and ensuring that the Eucharist is the center of parish life.
A pastor must be a priest “distinguished for his sound doctrine and integrity of morals, as well as endowed with a zeal for souls and other virtues,” according to the Code of Canon Law.
In general, an administrator has the same duties and scope of authority as a pastor, but they may be limited by the bishop.
Kirby was ordained a priest on July 27, 2007, by Bishop Robert Baker. Before moving to this area, he served as a priest in the Diocese of Charleston since his ordination. From 2010 to 2015, Kirby served as the diocesan vicar of vocations.
Kirby grew up in a military family that made South Carolina home in 1989. He graduated from Lower Richland High School and attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio before entering seminary at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He holds a doctorate in moral theology from Holy Cross University and is an author and teacher through St. Benedict Press and the Catholic Scripture Study. Kirby is also an adjunct professor of theology at Belmont Abbey College outside of Charlotte.
Our Lady of Grace, established in 2008, will host a reception immediately following the Liturgy of the Word at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 to celebrate Kirby’s appointment as pastor. The church is located at 7095 Waxhaw Highway, Lancaster. All members of the community are encouraged to attend. RSVP to Mary@gracewepray.org.
