The eighth Bear Hug Brawl, the annual junior varsity football jamboree, has been moved to Saturday, Aug. 24, at Buford High School’s Jackets Stadium. It begins at 10 a.m.

The junior varsity football squads from Andrew Jackson, Buford, Indian Land and Lancaster high schools will face off as follows:

• 10:10 a.m. – Buford vs. Lancaster

• 11 a.m. – Indian Land  vs. Andrew Jackson

• 11:30 a.m. – Kicking contest

• Noon – Indian Land  vs. Lancaster

• 12:45 p.m. – Andrew Jackson vs. Buford

The jamboree will also feature a silent auction and spirit contest.

The Buford High School Booster Club will provide concessions. Cater’s Taters and Creighton’s Creamery will sell food to fans. Carolina Panthers mascot Sir Purr will also attend.

Tickets are $5 prior to the day of the jamboree, $6 at the gate. Ages 12 and under get in free.

The jamboree is held in memory of the late Seth Muennich, a Buford High School freshman and Yellow Jackets JV football player, who was killed eight years ago after an auto accident near BHS. Muennich, 14, was hit by a car in front of Buford Middle School as he crossed North Rocky River Road to return to BHS to suit up for a JV football game.

This year’s JV jamboree is dedicated to the memory of Warriors lineman Ethan Swanner, a rising senior who died after a car accident in June. All proceeds from the drink stands will go to the Ethan Swanner fund.

All other proceeds from the Bear Hug Brawl go to Seth’s Giving Tree projects and scholarships. The foundation’s goal is to impact the future by helping instill the Christian values of faith, hope, love, integrity and generosity in students ages 12 to 16.

The name of the event – Bear Hug Brawl – comes from the hearty hugs Muennich was known for during his lifetime.

In the 2018 Brawl, Indian Land posted a 14-0 win over Andrew Jackson in the second period, and a 16-8 win over Lancaster in the third quarter.

Lancaster battled host Buford to a scoreless draw. Buford and Andrew Jackson battled to a 7-all draw to cap the action.

The Indian Land JV cheer team won the annual Brawl’s Spirit Award for the top squad at the jamboree.
