A Hurricane Irma evacuee from Florida, waiting out the storm with family at Sun City Carolina Lakes, disappeared Thursday afternoon, prompting the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office to ask for the public’s help in finding him.
The man, John D. DePasquale, 77, was located Thursday night in Georgia and is safe and uninjured, sheriff’s spokesman Doug Barfield said in a Friday morning release.
DePasquale disappeared about 3:30 p.m. Thursday from Truman Drive in Sun City. He drove away alone after saying he intended to go to Connecticut, where he once lived. He suffers from dementia and requires several medications that he did not have with him when he drove away, Barfield said.
He was found in northeast Georgia’s Banks County overnight, Barfield said.
“I do not have many details since he was out of state, but I believe he ran out of gas,” Barfield said.

Local law enforcement contacted the Lancaster sheriff’s office.
