Compete for a cause in the Run for Warriors 5K on Saturday, May 12.
The 5K, beginning at 8 a.m., and the fun run at 9:30 a.m. are organized by the Indian Land Middle School Athletic Booster Club, which was formed this year.
The club aims to raise money for basic athletic needs that the county has been unable to fund.
“We want to establish a base so that teams starting in the fall can have their needs met,” said Lisa Curtsinger with ILMS Athletic Booster Club.
“We still have sports that have to be played at the high school because we don’t have middle school teams,” said Cheryl Bowling, booster club president. “We have the numbers, just not the space, equipment and budget yet. Each year, we keep growing and we need to keep up with the growth financially.”
The event consists of a 5K, with a course around the school and through the nearby woods, and a one-mile fun run on the high school track. Medals will be awarded to the top three contestants in each age group, so come ready to race.
Register online at https://runforwarriors.racesonline.com or beginning at 6 a.m. on race day at Indian Land High School. Entrance fees are $35 for the 5K and $10 for the fun run. Children age 5 and under can run for free.
Packet pick-up is 4-6 p.m. Friday, May  11, at Salsarita’s, 8374 Charlotte Highway, Indian Land, and 6-7:45 a.m. the day of the race at Indian Land High.
Everyone is welcome to take part and help raise funds for the middle school students.
“Athletic needs are very important because it teaches kids to work with other kids and follow directions,” Bowling said. “It allows them be safe after school and practice locally with peers.”
Organizers are hoping that if this Race for Warriors is a success it can become an annual event.
The ILMS Athletic Booster Club event is sponsored by Allstate Insurance, Crossfit S3, Meeting Street Dentistry, Curtsinger Animal Hospital, Murdock Orthodontics, Salsarita’s, Thirty-One Gifts, Charlotte Yard Cards, Redblue and Which Wich.
