ILHS girls advance in volleyball playoffs

Three Lancaster County high school teams advanced in the opening round of the state volleyball playoffs Oct. 24.
Indian Land and Buford, as host teams, moved to second-round play, while AJ, on the road to launch postseason play, advanced.
The Region IV-AAA champion Indian Land Lady Warriors advanced with a 3-0 home win over Pendleton High School last week, winning 25-17, 25-13 and 25-23.
The Lady Warriors, unbeaten in region play this season, hosted Broome High School on Monday, Oct. 29, with the winner advancing to battle the Powdersville vs. Chesnee winner today, Oct. 31. (See results online.)
Buford, the Region IV-AA runner-up to North Central, also posted a 3-0 win Oct. 24, downing Ninety Six, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-11.
Buford advances to face St. Joseph’s in second-round play.
St. Joseph’s advanced with a 3-0 win over Central High School of Pageland.
The Lady Volunteers, the third-place team in Region IV-AA, rolled to a 3-0 win over host Abbleville on Oct. 24. The Lady Vols prevailed 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20 over the Lady Tigers.
“The win tonight was really a great team effort,” AJ coach John Verdugo said. “We played well defensively and we were able to create effective attack transitions.”
AJ, 10-3, hosted Greer Middle College on Monday, Oct. 28.
The state volleyball title round is Saturday, Nov. 10, with the Class AA state title match at noon and the Class AAA state title match set for 2:30 p.m., with the site to be determined.
