Firefighter killed while directing traffic at wreck

A Lancaster County firefighter was struck and killed while directing traffic at a wreck at the intersection of U.S. 521 and S.C. 5 Wednesday night, Nov. 7.
According to the Lancaster County Coroner's Office, the victim is Dennis Straight, 59, of Lancaster. Straight was a firefighter with Charlotte Road-Van Wyck Volunteer Fire Department.
According to Cpl. Bill Rhyne with S.C. Highway Patrol, Corey Wright, 33, of Kershaw was driving a 2013 Chevy Malibu about 7 p.m. Wednesday when he attempted to merge onto S.C. 5 from U.S. 521 and hit the firefighter.
Straight was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The incident is still under investigation.
