Daley wins at Bearcat mat tourney

Indian Land High School, ranked second in Class AAA, continued its stellar wrestling season with a fourth-place finish in the prestigious Bearcat Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6, at Rock Hill High School.

The Warriors, the highest-finishing Class AAA team in the 32-team field, were led by Kyle Daley, 27-4, who won the 152-pound class with a pin. Daley was 4-0 on the day.

Austin Ross, 28-3, was the runner-up at 113, going 3-1. Xavier Dreese was the runner-up in the 138-pound weight class. Dreese, 3-1 on the day, is 25-6 on the season.

Alfred Cortez, 22-10, was fourth at 195, while Wesley Johnson, 17-6, placed fifth in the 170-pound weight class.

Juan Alejandro, 20-9, was sixth in the 126-pound weight class.

Host Rock Hill, a Class AAAAA school, topped the field with 214.5 points. Lake Norman High School, with 181.5 points, was second, ahead of Class AAAA Lugoff-Elgin High School with 158.5 points.

Indian Land was fourth overall with 150 points.

“We wrestled well in an outstanding field,” ILHS coach Leon Boulware said. “The competition was stiff, but our guys stepped up with another outstanding effort. This overall experience is going to be a plus for our wrestling team.”
