Boykin letter: ‘Awe over the public show of patriotism’

-A A +A

Editor’s note: This is one community leader’s reaction to last week’s paper, which contained three sections – 22 pages – of Veterans Day tributes to those who’ve served our country.
I have never been more proud to be counted in the number of American veterans as I was Wednesday night. I literally did not want to put the newspaper down.
I continue to be in awe over the public show of patriotism and support displayed through my hometown paper in this edition.
I am a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where I served as a journalist/photojournalist for more than 20 years. I am a local pastor, educator, coach and true believer in what this country stands for. And I recognize the power of statements like the Wednesday paper and what they mean to veterans like me.
Your Veterans Day support coverage is unprecedented in my lifetime. And believe me, God and country have blessed me with quite a life!
My family has a history of military service on both sides, including my family originally from Alabama and my wife’s family born and raised right here in Lancaster County. We have traveled the world, as have many veterans from this community, and understand the sacrifice needed to help keep this nation strong.
The newspaper’s decision to provide this level of coverage – along with the overwhelming community support shown through the advertising, storytelling, ceremonies, shared photos, etc. – honors us all and leaves me feeling valued and respected beyond words.
Thank you, Lancaster News! Thank you, Lancaster County community. You have blessed my family and me today.
God bless you, and I pray that God will continue to bless America!
