  • I read with interest the editorial by Frank Knapp Jr., CEO of the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce, that was published in the Oct. 15 edition of The Lancaster News.

He slanted his article in such a manner that it appeared all South Carolina small business owners had been harmed by Sen. Mick Mulvaney’s decision to vote against legislation brought before both the House and Senate.

  • Recently, there have been a number of political advertisements from both parties regarding the Edenmoor subdivision.

I cannot speak to the involvement of Mick Mulvaney during the early stages of development, when it was known as St. Katherine’s, or during the adoption of the Edenmoor bonds, as that predates my service as county administrator.

During my tenure, the subdivision has been known as Edenmoor and has been owned by Lawson’s Bend, LLC.

  • In recent weeks, U.S. Rep. John Spratt, like most liberal Democrats, has abandoned any hope of running for office on his record in Congress, and has resorted to personal attacks on his opponent in an effort to divert attention away from the real issues and the failures of the government he has helped lead.

Spratt is a Washington establishment politician who has represented the S.C. 5th District

  • I’ve been looking at the web pages of two candidates for governor, Rep. Nikki Haley of Lexington (R) and Sen. Vincent Sheheen of Camden (D), trying to determine who would make the best governor.

I found that both candidates list endorsements.

Haley is supported by Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney,  Jenny Sanford, a host of Republican lawmakers and a group of TEA parties. She is endorsed by several newspapers, including the Edgefield Daily News, the Seneca Daily Journal and the Post & Courier.

  • In 2009, Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve System, was chosen by Time Magazine as Man of the Year. I enjoyed reading the article about Bernanke. eeIt contains interesting information about Bernanke including his childhood in Bennettsville and about monetary policy and the role of the Fed.

  • eeeeThere are too many people like Richards McCrae in politics today. Too many people who think politics is about tearing down the other party's candidate, smearing their character and trashing their name. That's a shame, because there are thousands of people out of work in the 5th District, and McCrae's tactics don't contain a single idea about putting even one person back to work.

  • Are we going to let the government be controlled by the progressive Democrats and continue to take the country down the road to socialism? Recent polls indicate the country is beginning to reject the Democratic-led Congress that is taking over our free enterprise system and more control of its citizens' freedom.

Most of the country’s citizens are coming to the realization of what the cost of the last election was when voters don’t do research, and only listen to the liberal-controlled news media.

  • I am very sad at the level political discourse has fallen to in our area and especially in the U.S. House District 5 race. The York County Democratic chairman slanders our Democratic County Council chairman Rudy Carter. Not one local Democrat comes to his defense.

Rudy and I have never agreed on every issue. What I have found is a person who I know will do what he tells me he will do.

  • Sheila Bickford has chosen to reply to my previous letter supporting Nikki Haley and Mick Mulvaney by making unsupported allegations and using material previously refuted.

Ever since Nikki Haley was unexpectedly brought into the spotlight, those discomfited by the possibility that she might assume a position of authority have responded by throwing unsupported dirt in her direction. She has been accused of having affairs, of failure to pay her taxes on time, etc.

  • I’m writing this letter to let everyone in Lancaster County know how our millionaire state senator and candidate for U.S. Congress truly feels about you.

I attended the grand opening of the new Lowes in Indian Land and spoke with our Sen. Mick Mulvaney, who was also there for the sawing of a 2x4.

Our senator told me that now all he needs in Indian Land is a Walmart and he won’t have any reason to drive to Lancaster again.

  • Now that the Lancaster County sheriff has demonstrated the ability to move holiday celebrations, I would like to request that the Fourth of July 2011 be moved from Monday to Saturday, July 2.

I understand moving holiday celebrations is serious business and I wouldn’t want this holiday moved without good reason so here are three solid reasons:

  • I just received a letter from my employer on the changes in my insurance coverage as a result of ObamaCare (health-care reform changes.) In exchange for my insurance company having to provide no lifetime maximum, no pre-existing condition limitations for enrollees under 19, coverage for lazy kids up to the age of 26 on their parents’ policies and 100 percent coverage for preventive care, here is what I get:

    • Increase in deductibles ($50-$100 per year)

    • Increase in co-pays ($5-$10 per visit)

    • Increase in premiums

  • Let us take this time to recognize Domestic Violence Month. Domestic Violence Month evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981, to raise awareness of efforts to end violence against women and children.

Domestic violence has become increasingly prevalent in modern culture.

What is domestic violence? It’s a behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Partners can be married or not married, heterosexual, gay or lesbian. They can live together, be separated or simply dating.

  • Do you live on a budget?

I know I do and so should my government. Do you go to work every day? Ah, me too. This is why on Nov. 2 I will be voting for conservative S.C. House Rep. Deborah Long. She has proven herself, by living on a budget and running a small, growing and successful health-care practice for more than 25 years.

  • I am writing in response to an article concerning a rebuttal to the mudslinging among the candidates. Debates, as well as signs, are all mudslinging to me.

Whether we talk or write about someone in the negative, it is wrong. Candidates will do what they do best, which is either tell the truth or lie.

The ones affected by this are we, the people. We grasp on to every word people say or do. God made each one of us different and this is why we don’t always agree. Your belief is your belief.

  • Deborah Long is the only choice for S.C. House District 45 on Nov. 2.

She has been a breath of fresh air in Columbia asking important questions and finding good solutions to state-related issues. Long takes her elected position very seriously. As a small business owner, she is always aware of consistuents’ real concerns.

  • In 1980, we moved from Long Island to North Carolina. In 1985, we became naturalized U.S. citizens and proudly registered to vote as Republicans. The country had just regained its hope and self-esteem under President Ronald Reagan after a decade of turmoil and international humiliation.

  • Many concur that when a government determines intervention is necessary in severe societal concerns, that government is merely doing what is expected of its elected members.

  • It is indeed refreshing to know that in an era when most politicians clamor for the limelight and to have their egos stroked to puff up their self esteem, there is one among us who truly cares about people and the common good. Larry Honeycutt is such a man.

While the Indian Land Action Council is a non-political entity, we believe in giving credit where credit is due.

Mr. Honeycutt is to be applauded for his service to his district, and, more importantly, the entire Lancaster County.

  • The establishment of an Indian Land Fire Protection District is essential to the well-being of our residents and firefighters.

As a retired career firefighter who served for 28 years, I can attest to the need for proper equipment and manpower to perform firefighting duties. The profession is risky enough, but without adequate gear and extra hands, the firefighters are unnecessarily exposed to considerable additional danger.
