Developer wants to make TreeTops into 'cluster subdivision'

A new residential development is being proposed on Van Wyck Road at the former site of the TreeTops children’s camp, where Mattamy Homes wants to build up to 1,200 homes.
The Canada-based homebuilder has filed two applications with the Lancaster County Planning Commission, the first asking for the rezoning of the 622-acre property at 9070 Van Wyck Road and the second for the allowance of cluster subdivisions for the entire county.

Council OKs second reading of $37M budget

It took almost an hour of discussion and three separate votes, but Lancaster County Council eventually approved second reading of its proposed 2013-14 county budget Monday night, June 10.
The series of votes – in which the motion for the county’s budget first failed, then was reconsidered, and finally approved with special conditions – came after a lengthy debate about planning fees, funding for nonprofit agencies and county employee pay raises.

That type of notoriety will never escape actor Ralph Waite, who portrayed Walton Sr. in the long-running "The Waltons" TV series Waite was in the Carolinas in late April filming a six-part short form miniseries, “Old Henry,” for INSP.
The veteran Emmy-nominated actor of the big screen, small screen and stage, will celebrate his 84th birthday later this month.

Gateway Gab: New traffic light on U.S. 521

The new traffic light at the intersection of the newly renamed Red Ventures Drive and Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) near the 521 Corporate Center, is now fully operational. It was turned on Thursday, June 6, said Ken Wilson, S.C. Department of Transportation resident engineer for Lancaster County, after flashing yellow for a week or so.
The new light is just part of the intersection project, which also includes left-hand turn lanes on both the north- and southbound lanes of Charlotte Highway, where motorists can expect daytime lane closures as the project winds up.

Heavy rain headed this way

Get ready to get wet.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain could drench this part of the Carolinas today as moisture from Tropical Storm Andrea collides with a lingering cold front.
The Associated Press reported Thursday, June 6, that up to 4 inches of rain could fall across the state through Saturday.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for Andrea along the Grand Strand. The heaviest rainfall is expected along the coast, where the center of the storm is expected to move.

County to hold public hearing on budget Monday

Taxpayers will have a chance to weigh in on the upcoming county budget, and a series of potential tax increases, during a public hearing at Lancaster County Council’s June 10 meeting.
Residents can voice concerns and ask questions during the public hearing on several proposed new fees in the draft budget. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at the Lancaster County Administration Building, 101 N. Main St.

Tornado watch issued for county

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 33 South Carolina counties including Lancaster, Chester, Fairfield, York and 16 North Carolina counties including Mecklenburg and Union and surrounding areas until 10 p.m. today, June 10. A tornado watch means that conditions may become favorable for a tornado to develop.
