Graduate Who Inspires 2013:...

How many teenagers do you know whom, if stuck at home for long, wouldn’t have to be reminded, cajoled, urged, pressured or out-and-out threatened to keep up with their classwork?
Let’s be honest. There aren’t many.

Genie and Terry Graham’s home and property at 8603 Van Wyck Road date back to more than 135 years ago.
Though it has experienced changes over the decades, The Ivy Place’s yard is still filled with many of the original plants. By blending a little of yesterday and today, they have created a beautiful homeplace filled with blooms throughout the year. This year, they added a huge bulb garden filled with thousands of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, as well as their first crop of strawberries.

Warriors top Landrum to advance...

Indian Land High School's boys soccer team posted a 6-1 Class AA Upper State playoff win over Region IV-AA foe Landrum High School on Thursday, May 9.
Landrum made its only goal five minutes into the game, before the IL Warriors took over the game.
IL senior Anthony Cutrone led the Warriors with two goals. Garrett Gerdes, Jake Retter, Nick Retter and Zac Patterson  each scored a goal. Nick Retter made his goal on a free kick.
Nick Retter had two assists, while Brandon Jacob had one.

Group renews efforts to...

A group of Indian Land residents fed up with what they say is the county’s lack of movement on dire issues affecting the community has reinvigorated its efforts to garner support for incorporation.
Though activity by the special interest group Indian Land Voice flagged somewhat last year, the group now has new officers, a second wind and is pressing forward in the process.
New IL Voice President Melvin Threatt said in addition to moving ahead with the push, the group is undertaking an increased effort to get the question on the ballot.

Bishops edge Warriors for Class...

GILBERT – Bishop England High School freshman Joel Bunting's golden goal was just that.

Bunting's nine-yard shot with 19 seconds left in the first of the two five-minute sudden-death overtime periods gave the Bishops a stunning 4-3 win over Indian Land for the Class AA state soccer championship at Gilbert High School's Leon Price Field on Saturday, May 18.

SCHP promotes Albert to Troop 4...

COLUMBIA – Bobby J. Albert has been promoted to the new Troop 4 commander with the S.C. Highway Patrol.
As commander of Troop 4, Albert will oversee the day-to-day enforcement and administrative operations of Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Union and York counties.
“Capt. Albert is a seasoned trooper who knows this area of the state well,” said Col. Mike Oliver, SCHP commander.
“He sets an excellent example and is well-respected among the troopers he will lead.”

Lady Warriors going to Upstate...

The Lady Warriors will face No. 1 seeded Christ Church Episcopal School for the A/AA Upper State soccer championship Monday.

Last night, May 10, Indian Land girls beat St. Joseph’s Catholic, 2-1, in Greenville in the third round of the Upper State playoffs.

Neither team had scored by halftime, but shortly afterward IL’s Shalyn Dougherty scored off an assist by Katherine Kilroy. 

IL golfers second in region...

Indian Land High School placed second in the region golf tournament Wednesday, May 8, at the Lancaster Golf Club.
The Andrew Jackson High School, 25-4, posted a 657 team score to top the six-team field for its first region golf championship since 1982.
The IL golf team posted a 689 – 343-346.

Crime Watch 5-22-13

From Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reports:
• About 5:27 p.m. May 12, deputies responded to Food Lion, 8175 Charlotte Highway, about someone shooting a window, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.  
Deputies arrived at the scene and spoke with a man who said an unknown person shot one of the store’s windows. The deputies noticed a large window, which was cracked and had an apparent bullet hole in it, the report said.

County library director to retire

The Lancaster County Library System is approaching the end of an era with the departure of longtime library director Richard Band and preparing to start another under the guidance of a new director.
Band, 64, is set to retire May 31 after nearly 35 years as library director. He will be replaced by 25-year library veteran and current York Public Library Manager Rita Vogel.
