Today's Opinions

  • Our View: Congrats and good luck to 2012 grads

Take a good look at today’s Graduation 2012 special section. It’s full of the graduates from all four county high schools, including Indian Land.
In the Indian Land section, you’ll read about Indian Land High School’s top scholars Adam Tuiletufuga and Savannah Adams, who will address their classmates as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, at Indian Land High’s graduation at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

  • Wilt column: Council needs public input on budget

The Lancaster County budget proposed for fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013) has been posted on the county website for a couple of weeks and has been the topic of discussion by the County Council Finance Committee (council members Larry McCullough as chairman, Jack Estridge and Charlene McGriff) at meetings on April 30, May 7 and 14.

  • Sweatt-Lambert letter: You can help foundation get award for Catawba River

The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation has been selected as one of the top 100 finalists in Cause An Effect, a State Farm philanthropic initiative that lets communities determine where grant funding is awarded, exclusively through Facebook.
We need you to rally behind our cause, cast your vote and help us earn a $25,000 grant.

  • Michalec letter: Transplants bring a lot to the table besides changes

It is indeed unfortunate that Myrtle Porter “resents these Northern transplants who are changing everything.”
Many of us transplants are not only responsible for this, but also for our many and varied efforts to improve the lives of the less fortunate in our area.
It’s people like Myrtle who appreciate those efforts in one breath and then resent us in the next.

  • Hall letter: ILMS PTA thanks Teacher Appreciation Week helpers

The Indian Land Middle School PTA would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who donated to the annual Teacher Appreciation Week.
Special thanks to Carolina Bistro, Wing King of Fort Mill, Jersey Mike’s, Showmars, McDonald’s and Founders Federal Credit Union, as well as several parents and community members.
The teachers and staff have been so appreciative of the special treats all week long.

  • Our view: Be sure
to honor mother today

No doubt you know what today is – Mother’s Day. The day set aside to honor and pay tribute to the ones who brought you into the world and tried to keep you on the right track.

  • Jedson column: All voters need a wake-up call

I would like to respond to Alana Henderson’s column, “All parties need wake-up call,” in the April 18 edition of Carolina Gateway.
Since I was labeled “uninformed” and “naïve” in Ms. Henderson’s article, I feel it necessary to correct her assumptions.
I haven’t found it advisable to assume I know everything about a person, but perhaps Ms. Henderson hasn’t learned that lesson yet.

  • Summers column: Cupboard at HOPE needs help

By now, you have probably read the story on page 2 about the investigation into missing money and a missing computer at HOPE in Lancaster.
If that wasn’t bad enough, there is another pressing problem issue, too.
The annual Stamp Out Hunger! food drive set for Saturday, May 12, is a godsend for the agency, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Somebody a lot smarter than me once said a picture is worth a thousand words and I had to see it for myself.
