  • Letter: Santa Train’s success due to community support

On Dec. 4 and 5, the city of Lancaster hosted the annual Santa Train Express. Because of the generous contributions of the L&C Railroad, Lancaster County, Duke Energy, Comporium Communications and Mayor Ann Taylor of Heath Springs, the Santa Express served more than 600 people. Children of all ages enjoyed two days of taking the Lancaster & Chester Railroad train from the South Pole (Lancaster Depot) to the North Pole (Heath Springs) for a Christmas experience.

  • Letter: Please do not steal flowers from her parents’ graves

I know everyone is having a hard time in this economy and I am no exception.
It is bad enough when people steal from stores and rob others, but when you steal flowers off graves, you must really be desperate.
I can’t afford to buy ready-made flowers for my parents’ graves. My sister and I together bought flowers and made flowers for our parents’ and grandmothers’ grave.

  • Letter: Spratt has done outstanding job of serving district, nation

During the past year, we have been very critical of U.S. Congressman John Spratt and his voting record. In fact, we have written several letters to the editor expressing our displeasure. We strongly believed Mr. Spratt had been mistakenly following Nancy Pelosi’s lead in recent years on the many bills being considered in Congress.

  • Letter: Thanks to all who helped Friends Used Book Room

Thanks from the Friends of the Del Webb Library Used Book Room for supporting our holiday book sale Dec. 4. Our sale total for books, calendars and bookmarks was $543, which easily surpassed our December 2009 sale total of $300.
Also a tremendous thanks to those of you who became generous members in 2010, supported us with your book donations and, of course, those of you who made regular purchases.

  • Letter: Writer happy to eat words, thank community for help

Some time ago, I submitted a letter to the editor decrying the sad state of our community when my wife was left on the side of the road with a disabled vehicle and two small children in the car and nary a person offered to help.
Today, I eat those words and apologize to this wonderful community. Life has a way of setting you straight on matters and my correction has been delivered.
My family and I were recently in a very bad car accident, in which my wife was suffered life-threatening injuries.

  • Letter: It’s Christmas, not ‘winter holidays’

On page 6 in the Dec. 15 Carolina Gateway, under the heading Education, there is a picture of children celebrating Hanukkah and yet, right next to it, you have an article about the the same school planning a “holiday” event. These holiday events have been called Christmas events for the last 200 years.
Just below that, you have an article about “winter holidays” beginning Dec. 20. These are not winter holidays, but Christmas holidays, declared a federal holiday.
We do not celebrate winter, we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

  • Letter: Christmas a time for helping

The Christmas season is upon us once again.
Sitting about with friends and acquaintances, someone always comes up with “Where do all these down-and-out folks come from at Christmas time?”
Well sir, I just decided to seek an answer.
Bless Pete, I figure that within us all is a little computer that kicks in about this time of the year to bring out the best  of our so-called human nature. Rather than complaining about our own misfortune, we realize that there are some folks who truly have some real honest-to-goodness difficulties.
