  • Why are our politicians being so kind to fallen governor?

There’s nothing new in the fact that the Republican Party has been, and is, hurting on the national level. The evidence was very strong in the recent election. Somewhere along the way, we have lost our direction and fell short in getting out our conservative message.

Sadly, as recent news has shown, this fact didn’t stay in Washington, but came right home to South Carolina.

  • 'Extreme Makeover Home Team'

Standing on a rooftop in sweltering 90-degree heat, holding a nail gun in one hand and some roofing shingles in another, Lindsey Fisher is not your typical 15-year-old.

Flanked by several other teens, Fisher made quick work of a series of shingles, shooting nails into the roof of a home she had never seen until a few days before. After the row was complete, she stood back and smiled.

  • Mulvaney backs Grooms for gov

It was campaigning as usual before the scandal broke in the Governor’s Office last month.

But since Republican Gov. Mark Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair and acknowledged leaving the country without notice for almost a week, almost all attention has been on the incumbent – and whether or not he should finish his 18 months in office.

But before this scandal broke, state Sen. Larry Grooms spent two days in Lancaster County doing what candidates hoping to be elected the next governor do early during the campaign.

  • McClennen: Lack of charges not proof of innocence

Editor’s note: The writer of this column, a former secretary at Indian Land High School, raised questions about student government funds used to do work on former ILHS administrative assistant Becky Settlage’s home and said Settlage was paid more than $18,000 for days she did not work. After an internal investigation by Lancaster County School District and investigations by 6th Circuit Court Solicitor Doug Barfield and the State Law Enforcement Division, the case was closed in December 2008, with no charges filed against Settlage.

  • Chit Chat Baby offers high-end baby gear

Online baby gear retailer Chit Chat Baby has opened its first retail store in Indian Land at 160 Place.

The store actually began as a popular Web site, ChitChatBaby.com, three years ago. Owners Rob Macklefresh, 26, and Robbie Conley, 24, started the site as a message board for moms and moms-to-be, and soon it grew into an online marketplace for favorite baby gear lines like Britax, Peg Perego and Bugaboo.

Before starting the Web site, brothers-in-law Macklefresh and Conley worked as consultants for baby industry companies such as Combi, which is located in Fort Mill.

Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Department wrapped up the 2009 youth baseball season by crowning county champions in three age groups.

The county tournament was held June 15-25, with the finals played at the Springdale Recreation Complex.

The county champion in the coach-pitch age group was Our Lady of Grace Catholic Mission in Indian Land.

  • Long calls Gov. Sanford’s absence ‘dereliction of duty’

The past two weeks have been ones of turmoil for our state. The actions of Gov. Mark Sanford have shocked and saddened us all. He has broken the public trust and now has the burden of answering for those actions.

While I do not condone what our governor has done, any actions from this point forward must be reasonable, responsible and based on fact with the best interests of South Carolina at the forefront.

His admitted relationship with a woman other than his wife is not of the utmost concern except to him, his wife, family and God.
