  • Sunny Side Up: Sun City gears up for autumn

    At Sun City Carolina Lakes, we plan, we work hard, we play hard and we help our neighbors when and where we can. This summer is no exception.
    Two tournaments coming up
    The Bocce Ball Club is well beyond the planning stages of its next big event.  Registration is under way for a huge tournament not only to have fun, but to raise money for a very worthy cause.  

  • Arts Scene: LCCA elects new officers

    The Lancaster County Council of the Arts held its annual meeting June 21 at the Springs House. Thank you to so many interested people for attending our 2012 fiscal year business meeting and reception.
    Attendees were also able to view the acclaimed Traveling South Carolina Water Media Exhibit on display in our galleries and hear a special music performance by Kelly Burdette on the flute. The wonderfully artistic table arrangement designed specifically for the evening was provided by Winona’s Flowers.

  • Summer Day concert at IL library Tuesday

    “Sing loud, jump high and Dream Big!”
    If popular children’s entertainer Roger Day has anything to say about it, children and adults will do exactly that at an end-of-the-summer family concert Tuesday, July 31, at the Del Webb Library at Indian Land.

  • ‘Aladdin Jr.’ takes the stage

    The Community Playhouse of Lancaster County is bringing “Aladdin Jr.” to stage July 19-22 with all the magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides as the popular Disney tale.
    Directed by Elaine Reese, “Aladdin Jr.” has an all-kid cast in a stage adaptation of the 1992 Disney film with the well-known songs, “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me.”

  • Teens ‘Takeover’ library

    Slots are quickly filling up for the National Teen Library Lock-In at the Del Webb Library at Indian Land on Friday, Aug. 3.  
    From 6 to 9 p.m., teens will participate in duct-tape crafts, karaoke, taste tests, origami, ransom note poetry and more. In conjunction with other libraries across the country, teens will participate in a photo scavenger hunt, a Thriller dance-off, online video gaming and a Minute to Win It competition.

  • Arts camps to begin next week

    The Lancaster County Council of the Arts is still accepting registrations for its annual Arts and Sciences Camp, the first of which begins July 9 at Covenant Baptist Church in Lancaster.
    The camp, which is held at several different locations throughout the county, is designed to spark elementary-age children's imagination and creativity.

  • Sunny Side Up: Show, drives, walk successful efforts to help our neighbors

    Residents and guests of Sun City Carolina Lakes were given a special treat when the Sun City Choral Society presented “100 Years of Broadway,” a fabulous show wrapping up a gorgeous spring May 18-19. Directed by Norm Speiser, the chorus delighted its audience and received standing ovations for each performance.
    The Choral Society organized and began rehearsing four years ago. They have presented several concerts over the years. The group also performs at special events, such as the Memorial Day ceremony held on the Lake House back lawn.  

  • Red Hat clubs enjoy annual picnic

    The Sun City Carolina Lakes annual Red Hat picnic brought the community’s six clubs together in May, while throughout the year, the individual chapters enjoyed various activities.
    With all six clubs, there could be a Sun City Carolina Lakes Red Hat chapter meeting any day of the week, plus the chapter that meets at night to accommodate working members.
    The 2012 all-hats event at the Lake House was hosted by Chapter 5, the Ladies of the Lakes.

  • Senior swimmer wins six events at Beaufort games

    Sun City Carolina Lakes swimmer Fred Ruppenthal is just getting better with age.
    The 78-year-old won six gold medals in the Beaufort County Senior Games in Bluffton on Nov. 1, 2011, two of them in events he doesn’t usually swim in.
    “They are beautiful medals, with a torch on the front,” he said.
    Ruppenthal, who has dominated the state’s senior swimming scene since he moved here in 2007, won four freestyle events and two backstroke events.

  • Finally Friday concerts start up

    The sounds of bluegrass, soul and rock will greet you as you make your way to downtown Lancaster on select evenings this summer.
    The city of Lancaster is preparing to launch the second year of its Finally Friday summer series. The events, held on the last Friday of the month, will feature live music along with a variety of food and arts and crafts.
    The events, to run each time from 6 to 9 p.m., will take place at the intersection of Main and Gay streets in Lancaster. They are free of charge and open to the public.
