Sign up now for fall youth sports

Registration is now open for Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Commission’s fall youth sports. The county offers football, cheerleading and volleyball for ages 7-12; soccer for ages 5-15; and introduction to soccer for 4-year-olds.

Fees are $75 for football, $30 for cheerleading, $50 for volleyball, $65 for soccer and $50 for intro to soccer.

The age cut-off date is Sept. 1, 2017.

In the 4-year-old soccer program, each child will be introduced to the basic techniques of soccer, and receive a T-shirt and soccer ball. It will meet twice a week for about six weeks.

- Indian Land @ Walnut Creek, 10521 Walnut Creek Parkway: Aug. 9, 10, 14, 16-17, 6-8 p.m.

- Springdale Recreation Center, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster: through Aug. 18, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays

Basketball Back-to-School Night Aug. 11

Friday Night Basketball, held at the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation’s Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster, is hosting Back-to-School Night 6:30-9:45  p.m. Aug. 11.

Admission is $3. The event, open to high school and middle school students, includes a three-point shootout, free-throw challenge and 5-on-5 pickup tournament. Free food and school supplies will also be given away at the event.

LHS swim team swimathon Saturday
The Lancaster High School swim team will have a swimathon Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 at the Lancaster County Pool, 106 S. Wylie St., Lancaster.
Those interested can sponsor a swimmer, or make a single donation.

North-South Kickoff Classic on Aug. 12

The annual Founders Kickoff Classic – North vs. South – is Aug. 12 at Buford High School’s Jackets Stadium.

The four Lancaster County schools will face four teams from North Carolina.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the event to start at 6.

Andrew Jackson opens play, facing Northwest Cabarrus at 6 p.m. Lancaster meets Harding of Charlotte at 7 p.m., followed by Indian Land against Parkwood at 8 p.m. Host Buford meets Cuthbertson at 9 p.m.

Tickets are available at all four county high schools in the main office for $5. Tickets at the gate on game night are $6.

Classic officials urge fans to buy tickets in advance to avoid long lines the night of the event.

Bear Hug Brawl VI JV Kickoff Aug. 19

 Seth’s Giving Tree will host the sixth annual Bear Hug Brawl junior varsity football kickoff 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Buford High School Stadium. 

Andrew Jackson, Buford, Lancaster and Indian Land teams will compete.

The event will feature games, prizes and food from Cater’s Taters and Creighton’s Creamery, as well as a special visit from the Carolina Panthers Sir Purr.

Family Fishing Clinic Aug. 19 in Sun City

A free Family Fishing Clinic is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 19 at Grandparents’ Park in Sun City Carolina Lakes. Instructors are SCCL Sport Fishing Club volunteers, trained by the S.C. De-partment of Natural Resources. The clinic will introduce the basics of fishing. Bait, rods and reels, and tackle will be provided. IL vs. Buford alumni game Aug. 26

The Indian Land High Buford alumni football players will play an Indian Land High alumni team in flag football Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at BHS’s Jackets Stadium. Greenway golf tournament Aug. 19

The Lindsay Pettus Greenway Golf Tournament is 9 a.m. Aug. 19 at Lancaster Golf Club, 1821 Springs Club Road, Lancaster. It costs $200 for a four-man team and includes lunch, door prizes and gift bags. 

Prizes include $500 for first place, $300 for second place, $100 for third place and prizes for the closest to pin and longest drive. Teas may register at the golf course or email Katsul@comporium.net before Aug. 16.
