Discovery School deadline Feb. 29
The application deadline for the 2012-13 school year at Discovery School, Lancaster County’s only charter school, is Feb. 29.
An Information session for prospective Discovery School parents will be at 6 p.m. March 6 in Room 5 at the school, 302 W. Dunlap St., Lancaster.  
A lottery will be at 3:45 p.m. March 28 at Discovery School. It is open to the public.

Petersen offers home school PE class

An All Sport Home School Physical Education class will be offered from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. on Tuesdays through through May 14 on the City of Lights  campus.
The class is open to students from Fort Mill, Indian Land, Tega Cay and Lancaster.
Instructor is Greg Petersen. Cost is $30 for the first student per month, $27 per additional student from same family. For details, call (704) 495-5193.


Discovery School board to meet

The Discovery School governing board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Discovery School, 302 W. Dunlap St., Lancaster.


ILMS to host academic challenge

Indian Land Middle School will host an academic challenge match with Indian Land High School at 4 p.m. Feb. 15 in the middle school gym.
ILHS will host a match at 4:15 p.m. March 14 in the high school media center.


Kids on the Ball under way at ILES

The Kids on the Ball after-school program began Monday, Feb. 6, at Indian Land Elementary School. For details, visit www.kidsontheball.net or call Frank Palermo at (803) 804-7326.
It is open to ILES students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Adult Education to offer classes in IL

Lancaster County Adult Education plans to begin offering classes in the Indian Land area soon. Classes will include basic skills math, pre-GED prep, GED prep and more. For details about the classes, to volunteer or sign up for classes, call (803) 285-7660.
GED online study, WorkKeys certification, reading for workplace success, virtual high school and HSAP study. The schedule and location are not yet set.

Sun City club endows Winthrop scholarship
The Lifelong Learning Club at Sun City Carolina Lakes has endowed a scholarship fund at Winthrop University specifically for graduates of Indian Land High  School.
This fund is intended to be used to help defray the cost of textbooks and related learning materials required by needy students.
The fund, initially created at $3,000 will be administered by the Winthrop University Foundation and be disbursed by the Winthrop Office of Financial Aid.
A maximum of $500 per student per year has been allocated. Current and prospective students should contact the Winthrop University Office of Financial Aid for applications.
The Lifelong Learning Club recognizes the importance of education at all levels, and appreciates the opportunity to thank the Lancaster County community in this tangible way. The funds were generated by the club members.
Anyone wishing to contribute to this scholarship fund is directed to the Winthrop University Foundation, which will accept donations at any time. Send donations to Winthrop University Foundation, Attn: J. Terrell May, 516 Oakland Ave, Sellers House, Rock Hill, SC 29733.                   
2012 school board meeting schedule set
Lancaster County School District has set the times and dates of its regular monthly board meetings for 2012 as follows:
• Feb. 21 – Regular meeting
• March 20 – Regular meeting
• April 17 – Regular meeting
• May 15 – Regular meeting
• June 19 – Regular meeting
• July 17 – Regular meeting
• Aug. 21 – Regular meeting
• Sept. 18 – Regular meeting
• Oct. 16 – Regular meeting
• Nov. 20 – Regular meeting
• Dec. 11 – Regular meeting
Each meeting begins with an executive (closed) session at 6 p.m. and open session at 7 p.m. The board meets at the district office at 300 S. Catawba St., Lancaster.
