Indian Land Middle School will host an academic challenge match with Indian Land High School at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 15, in the middle school gym.

PTA social Thursday at IL Middle
Indian Land Middle School will hold a PTA social from 3:35 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Students will enjoy refreshments and dancing with music from a disc jockey.
It’s time to register youngest students
Heads up, parents of little ones: It’s time to start getting your children ready for “big school.”
All nine Lancaster County elementary schools will hold kindergarten and first-grade registration for next school year Feb. 23 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Registration for the district’s 4- year-old program will be at Brooklyn Springs, Buford and Heath Springs elementary schools and Southside Early Childhood Center during the same hours.
The Lancaster County Health Department at 1833 Pageland Highway, Lancaster, will hold immunization clinics from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. today, Feb. 15, Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must achieve a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.
• Ryan Anderson, a senior mechanical engineering major at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester. To make the dean’s list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.40 to 3.59.
Anderson is a 2008 graduate of New Canaan High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Anderson of Fort Mill.
• Two area students – Jacob Jamison and DaMonique McClure, both of Lancaster – made the dean’s list at Wingate University during the fall 2011 semester.
The dean’s list requires a term grade-point average of 3.30 or at least 12 quality-point academic hours with no grade below a C.
Discovery School deadline Feb. 29
The application deadline for the 2012-13 school year at Discovery School, Lancaster County’s only charter school, is Feb. 29.
An Information session for prospective Discovery School parents will be at 6 p.m. March 6 in Room 5 at the school, 302 W. Dunlap St., Lancaster.
A lottery will be at 3:45 p.m. March 28 at Discovery School. It is open to the public.

Register now for summer camp
Registration is under way for Camp Adventure Summer 2012, to be held June 18-21. Students now in grades kindergarten through five are eligible to attend the camp offered by the Lancaster County School District gifted and talented program.
The first week’s courses include Can You Dig It?, Lost World of Dinosaurs, Incredible, Edible Science and Math and Recess Revolution.
Cost is $95 per student. Applications can be picked up at Discovery School, 302 W. Dunlap St. Lancaster.

Adult Education to offer classes in IL
Lancaster County Adult Education plans to begin offering classes in the Indian Land area soon. Classes will include basic skills math, pre-GED prep, GED prep and more. For details about the classes, to volunteer or sign up for classes, call (803) 285-7660.
GED online study, WorkKeys certification, reading for workplace success, virtual high school and HSAP study. The schedule and location are not yet set.

Kids on the Ball under way at ILES

It is open to ILES students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Petersen offers home school PE class
An All Sport Home School Physical Education class will be offered from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. on Tuesdays through through May 14 on the City of Lights campus.
The class is open to students from Fort Mill, Indian Land, Tega Cay and Lancaster.

Sun City club endows Winthrop scholarship
The Lifelong Learning Club at Sun City Carolina Lakes has endowed a scholarship fund at Winthrop University specifically for graduates of Indian Land High School.
This fund is intended to be used to help defray the cost of textbooks and related learning materials required by needy students.
The fund, initially created at $3,000 will be administered by the Winthrop University Foundation and be disbursed by the Winthrop Office of Financial Aid.
A maximum of $500 per student per year has been allocated. Current and prospective students should contact the Winthrop University Office of Financial Aid for applications.
The Lifelong Learning Club recognizes the importance of education at all levels, and appreciates the opportunity to thank the Lancaster County community in this tangible way. The funds were generated by the club members.
