ILES science fair open house Thursday
Indian Land Elementary School will hold an open house for its science fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. Science fair projects will be on display for parents to see.


Discovery School info session Thursday
Information sessions for prospective Discovery School parents will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and March 6 in Room 5 at Discovery School, 302 W. Dunlap St., Lancaster. The charter school application deadline for the 2012-13 school year is Feb. 29.
A lottery will be at 3:45 p.m. March 28 at Discovery School. It is open to the public.

Students make Clemson honors list

The following area students have been named to the President’s List at Clemson University for the fall 2011 semester:
• Jennifer Lynn Blethen of Fort Mill, who is majoring in cecondary education (math)
• Samantha Morgan Chapman of Fort Mill, who is majoring in English
• Jacquelyn Marie Evans of Fort Mill, who is majoring in genetics
• Brooke Marie Adams of Indian Land, who is majoring in early childhood education
• Elizabeth Mary Wheeler of Indian Land, who is majoring in civil engineering
• Alexander Jameson Young of Indian Land, who is majoring in computer science
To be named to the president’s list, a student must achieve a 4.0 (all As) grade-point average.


Kids on the Ball begins at ILES Feb. 6

The Kids on the Ball after-school program will begin Monday, Feb. 6, at Indian Land Elementary School. It is open to ILES students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Cost is $105 (covers insurance, equipment and T-shirt) for the 12-week program.
Each day, participants will get the opportunity to take part in one or more different sports and different character-building activities.

District seeks Hall of Fame nominations
Lancaster County School District is accepting nominations for its Education Hall of Fame for 2012.
Nominees may be former teachers, administrators, board members or community members who have made significant contributions to the district through their work as civic leaders, politicians or as “friends of education.” Students, educators and community members are eligible to make nominations.
Deadline for nominations is Monday, Feb. 6.
Mail nominations to Hall of Fame, Lancaster County School District, 300 Catawba St., Lancaster, SC, 29720; or drop them off at the district office.

Area students make Wofford dean’s list

The following area students have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester at Wofford College in Spartanburg:
• Patrick Scott Marshall of Lancaster
• Lamont Louis McPhearson of Lancaster
• David Jacob Roberts of Indian Land
To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 semester hours of graded courses and attain a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or higher.


Adult Education to offer classes in IL
Lancaster County Adult Education plans to begin offering classes in the Indian Land area soon. Classes will include basic skills math, pre-GED prep, GED prep, GED online study, WorkKeys certification, reading for workplace success, virtual high school and HSAP study. The schedule and location are not yet set.
Volunteers are also needed.

Sun City club endows Winthrop scholarship
The Lifelong Learning Club at Sun City Carolina Lakes has endowed a scholarship fund at Winthrop University specifically for graduates of Indian Land High  School.
This fund is intended to be used to help defray the cost of textbooks and related learning materials required by needy students.
The fund, initially created at $3,000 will be administered by the Winthrop University Foundation and be disbursed by the Winthrop Office of Financial Aid.
A maximum of $500 per student per year has been allocated. Current and prospective students should contact the Winthrop University Office of Financial Aid for applications.
The Lifelong Learning Club recognizes the importance of education at all levels, and appreciates the opportunity to thank the Lancaster County community in this tangible way. The funds were generated by the club members.
Anyone wishing to contribute to this scholarship fund is directed to the Winthrop University Foundation, which will accept donations at any time. Send donations to Winthrop University Foundation, Attn: J. Terrell May, 516 Oakland Ave, Sellers House, Rock Hill, SC 29733.  

                 
2012 school board meeting schedule set
Lancaster County School District has set the times and dates of its regular monthly board meetings for 2012 as follows:
• Feb. 3-4 – Annual board planning meeting
• Feb. 21 – Regular meeting
• March 20 – Regular meeting
• April 17 – Regular meeting
• May 15 – Regular meeting
• June 19 – Regular meeting
• July 17 – Regular meeting
• Aug. 21 – Regular meeting
• Sept. 18 – Regular meeting
• Oct. 16 – Regular meeting
• Nov. 20 – Regular meeting
• Dec. 11 – Regular meeting
Each meeting begins with an executive session at 6 p.m. and open session at 7 p.m. The board meets at the district office at 300 S. Catawba St., Lancaster.
