Jackson letter: Dead deer photo disturbs reader

-A A +A

I am disturbed by the picture and story in your Jan. 25 issue regarding Thomas Mills, a 9-year-old who killed his first deer.
Although I am not fond of the sport, I cannot understand how a child can be allowed to shoot a weapon, even with supervision.
The law does not permit a licensed driver, parent or otherwise, to turn over their car keys to a 9-year-old. You have to be 16 with a learner’s permit and the law also considers a car to be a weapon.
I am puzzled as to how this is possible in any state or something to brag about.

Ms Jackson's letter

Ms. Jackson,
I am disterbed by your comments on the subject of hunting and the lame compairison you have made with hunting and driving. First, I commend the parents of Thomas Mills; they are teaching their son many valuble lessons. One responsibility, gun/hunting saftey, how to provide for himself and a family in the future. Laws dont allow children to operate cars; however, it may not be all that common around this area, farmers rely on their families to learn to operate farm equipment in order to keep food on the table for the family. Not to many years ago, children operated eqipment such as tractors. Your comments and attitude concerning hunting favor that of those who were raised north of the Mason Dixon line. Having been raised south of the line, myself I enjoy excercizing my freedom. I am proud to have the opportunity to provide for a family with freash meat. You are in the South, and that is how we do it here.
