IL booters cap stellar season

A few notes to cap coverage on the Indian Land High School soccer team’s banner season.
The Warriors of coach Adam Cole posted quite a season. The IL booters set a record for wins in a season – 21 – and were ranked No. 2 in the final Class AA state soccer poll.
In addition to the Warriors state runner-up trophy, Indian Land captured the Rose City Classic title, the Region IV-AA crown and the Class AA Upper State championship.
The Class AA Upstate title and a state title berth were reached in the Warriors’ second season as a Class AA school.
The 2012 season was IL’s 17th in soccer. Assistant coach Gary Smith, a former IL head soccer coach, has been with the Warriors’ program each year since its inception.
The IL staff includes Tim Thornton, who also guides the Junior Warriors’ soccer team.
Trio to USC Lancaster
Three IL senior players graduated, but you will likely be seeing them in the next two seasons.
The Warriors’ threesome of forward Nick Outen, along with defenders Carson McGinn and Denis Killoran, will be members of the first University of South Carolina at Lancaster men’s soccer team, which launches play in the fall.
Outen’s final season saw him set the school record for goals in a season – 47. The old mark of 33 was set by Sergio Esparrago in 2009.
Rowe’s an all-star
Indian Land High senior defender Jonathan Rowe hasn’t quite capped his high school soccer career.
Rowe has been selected to play in the annual North-South All-Star Classic in Charleston on June 16 at the College of Charleston Soccer Stadium in Mount Pleasant.
Rowe, the Warriors’ Defensive MVP, earned all-region and Class AA all-state honors.
Indian Land sports history
The Warriors’ soccer team made a little school history, earning a bid to a state championship game for the first time since the 1972-73 Warriors basketball team 39 years ago.
That team included Rick Furr, now the Warriors’ assistant athletic director. Furr later returned to his prep alma mater to coach the IL boys basketball and baseball teams. Furr, battling the flu, was outstanding, netting 27 points in the 65-63 loss to Holly Hill.
The team also included Ray Moore, the brother of Lancaster County School District Superintendent Dr. Gene Moore.
The 1973 Warriors’ basketball team, down 60-49 in the final period, used a torrid rally only to fall short in a 65-63 loss to Holly Hill.
Coach Tommy Gaither’s IL team defeated Whitmire, 59-55 for the Class A Upstate title that year.
