Council to discuss LARS at
 Monday meeting

-A A +A
By Chris Sardelli

Lancaster County Council will once again discuss the future of the Lancaster Area Ride Service when it meets Monday, Feb. 13.
Council recently tasked a committee to look at possibilities for extending the medical transportation program and will discuss the committee’s findings on Monday.
One suggestion from the committee is to have council authorize sending a letter of pending grant submission to the S.C. Department of Transportation, which will hold grant funds already set aside for LARS.
The discussion comes about a month after council voted not to apply for a SCDOT grant which would have continued LARS when its current grant expires later this year. Council reconsidered its vote at its last meeting, though it had no impact on submitting the grant application.
Other items on council’s agenda include a request from the county’s Recreation Department for money to help with maintenance at the Walnut Creek recreation complex and a proposal from County Administrator Steve Willis to hire additional staff for the county’s Emergency Medical Service to help reduce overtime expenses.
Also on Monday, Council will hold two special presentations. The first is to recognize the Lancaster County Recreation All Star Teams, while there will also be a presentation of awards  from the S.C. Association of Counties to the county’s Risk Management team.
There will be a closed session before the meeting, at 6 p.m., for council to discuss a legal issue regarding Edenmoor surety bonds and to hear an economic development update from Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. President Keith Tunnell. The closed session will continue after the meeting if needed.
Council meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday each month in council chambers at the Lancaster County Administration Building, 101 N. Main St., Lancaster.
Council meetings are open to the public. Council agenda packets are available online at www.mylancastersc.org, by looking under the Government Tab and then clicking Agendas and Minutes.
