Council on Aging offering class
The Lancaster County Council on Aging will hold beginning word processing classes from 10 to 11 a.m. today, Jan. 4, 11, 18 and Feb. 1, 2012, at the Prime Time for Seniors Center, 309 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster. The cost is $20. For details, call (803) 285-6956, ext. 10.


Relay for Life kickoff Thursday in Lancaster
The kickoff meeting for the American Cancer Society 2012 Relay for Life is 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at First ARP Church, 701 N. Main St., Lancaster.
The meeting is for all current or previous team captains to receive information about this year’s event. Anyone interested in starting a Relay for Life team is also invited to attend to learn about all the events planned for the upcoming year.

Chatham County Line takes stage Friday

Chatham County Line, a bluegrass musical group, will  perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 in Bundy Auditorium at the University of South Carolina Lancaster, 476 Hubbard Drive. Lancaster. Admission is $15.
Formed in Raleigh, N.C., in 1999 from members of the band Stillhouse, the band has released five albums, including four on the Yep Roc label and are popular in Europe, as well as the USA.

Wanted: Volunteer of the Year nominations

The Lancaster county Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the Volunteer of the Year award. All residents, businesses and volunteer organizations are invited to make nominations for this special award.
The award includes a $1,000 contribution in the name of the recipient to his/her primary volunteer organization of interest.
Nomination forms are available at the chamber office, 453 Colonial Ave., Lancaster, and may be mailed or e-mailed.
The deadline for nominations has been extended to noon Friday, Jan. 6. For details, call the chamber office, (803) 283-4105.
The Volunteer of the Year will be announced and recognized at the chamber’s 2012 Annual Meeting on Jan. 26.


Paws to hold yard sale Saturday
Paws in the Panhandle will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10681 Barberville Road. Yard sale items include furniture, TVs, Christmas items, animal products, exercise equipment, clothes, shoes, books  and more.
Animals will be available for adoption, too.
Volunteers are needed to help with these events and donations of dog food, pet products, flea and tick treatments, yard sale and thrift store items are also welcome.

SAR to hear about 'Hercules of the Revolution' on Jan. 7
The Col. William Bratton Chapter of the S.C. Society Sons of the American Revolution will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Fort Mill Library, 1818 2nd Baxter Crossing, Fort Mill.
James Warder, co-author of “Hercules of the Revolution,” will tell the inside story of the life of Peter Francisco, a Revolutionary War hero who served three tours of duty, fought in five major battles and was wounded six times. A short PBS film will be shown on Francisco’s life.
The meeting is open to guests, family members and anyone interested in researching their ancestral lineage and joining SAR.

Arts Council hosts artist's reception Sunday
Lancaster County Council of the Arts will host a reception for Sun City Carolina Lakes artist Barbara Naughton from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8 at the Springs House, 201 W Gay St. Lancaster. The public is invited to the opening of this exhibit and reception.
Naughton is a graduate of Queens College in New York and attended classes at the Art Students League. She has taught elementary art classes got grades one through eight and was an art therapist for eight years. Her work has been in art shows, small galleries and private collections in New York, Philadelphia, Texas, Florida, Brazil and Ireland. She is a member of Sun City’s “Art in the City” art club. She especially enjoys painting landscapes and the challenge of painting outdoors.
Naughton's watercolors will be on display throughout January.

Adult Literacy offers computer classes
Lancaster County Adult Literacy will hold the following computer classes:
• Jan. 9-Feb. 2 – Word processing, including letters, resumes and other documents
• March 6-April 5 – Using Excel: Spreadsheets simplified.

‘Breakfast for the Brain’ begins soon

Wildlife rehab group offers classes for new volunteers
The Animal Rehabilitators of the Carolinas (ARC) is offering a two-day class for new volunteers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 4 and 1 to 7 p.m. Feb 5.
ARC is a nonprofit group dedicated to the care and release of orphaned and injured wildlife in within a 50-mile radius of Charlotte.  Volunteers rehabilitate wildlife out of their homes. No previous experience is necessary, but volunteers must be at least 18 years old and complete the training.
The class includes two days of training, a manual and first-year membership with ARC for $50. Classes cover basic care and feeding of wildlife and species-specific information.

Certified beekeeping course begins soon
The Lancaster County Bee Keepers Association will hold a 6-week beekeeping course Feb. 7 through March 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday at the Marion Sims Theater at Springs Memorial Hospital. The course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to successfully keep and manage honeybees. You will learn how to listen to the bees, work colonies and when and how to collect honey. The course fee is $45 and includes the course, book, certification test and one-year membership in the S.C. United Way offers garden spots
The United Way of Lancaster County is seeking participants for the Lancaster County Community Garden. Garden sites near the Springdale Recreation Complex, 260 S. Plantation Road, Lancaster, seeds and plants will be provided free for participants.
Free seeds and plants will be provided for participants.
Deadline to sign up is Jan. 30, 2012. Applications are available at Springdale Recreation Complex and the United Way of Lancaster County office, 109 S. Wylie St., Lancaster. 

The garden is taking orders for cookbooks for $10 each; they will be $15 after Jan. 15, 2012.

Golf and Rotary clubs collect items for kids
Carolina Lakes Golf Club and the Indian Land Rotary Club are collecting food, paper and toiletry donations for the Rock Hill Children’s Attention Home and the Lancaster Children’s Home.
Indian Land residents may drop off canned goods, paper products or toiletry items in the lobby of Carolina Lakes Golf Club, where there is a collection container.
 

Health department offers flu shots
The Lancaster County Health Department is offering flu shots. This year, DHEC is contracting with VAXCARE to provide the vaccines. The company can bill selected insurance companies, along with Medicare Part B. Cost is $25 for the flu shot or $30 for the flu mist. To make an appointment, call (803) 286-9948.

Library offers preschool storytime
The Del Webb Library at Indian Land, 7641 Charlotte Highway, holds Wonderful Wednesdays, a preschool storytime for ages 3 to 5, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Wednesday. For details, call (803) 548-9260.
